I compressed some wax between the intake and head on both sides, and they appeared to be quite even on both sides.
Does anyone have any suggestions on how to fix this issue? Should I get a set of MLS gaskets to try and seal it?
Any of you seen this issue? Register now for free! Welcome to CHR. I'm not sure that it's relevant, but the first thing that comes to mind is that you have no gap at the "china wall" block to intake surfaces front and back. If your Edelbrock intake is sitting too low and actually riding on the block surfaces then the intake to head surfaces aren't going to seal, and this would be made worse if you're using rubber gaskets on the china wall seal.
Just my thought, and it may be bogus. Matthyj likes this. Clean all of that mess off the block. If you're reading this article, you've probably already experienced and repaired this issue at least onceor are in the process of repairing it or will be soon enough! This problem has been a gold mine for GM and the auto repair industry. So, you might be wondering, is there a way to prevent this from happening?
The answer is both a yes and no. Having worked on cars as a professional automotive tech for about 20 years and having repaired this condition many many times, I can tell you that you can do certain things to avoid a repeat of this problem.
In this article I'll offer you several suggestions on what you can do to mitigate this problem. In a nutshell, it's because the intake manifold gaskets are made out of a composite material the technical name for plastic. And even though these plastic intake manifold gaskets are designed to be pretty tough, they don't last forever.
What exacerbates the problem is the fact that the metal parts, the intake manifold gaskets are sandwiched between, expand and contract. This expansion and contraction is due to the engine starting and heating up and then cooling down when turned off.
This eventually results in gaskets that look like the one in the photos I'm using in this article. Once out of warranty So, is there something that can be done to avoid a repeat of this particular problem? The answer is yes and it involves using an updated type of intake manifold gasket made by Felpro and tightening the intake manifold bolts with a torque wrench to specification.
Whether you replace the leaking intake manifold gaskets yourself or you're having it done at your local automotive repair shop Because the old plastic type gaskets are still being produced and sold. Not too mention that there's a price difference between both.
Now, in case you're wondering what the heck is the difference between them The updated gaskets have a metal shim type core with rubber gaskets lining the ports as opposed to an all plastic core. Using the updated metal shim type intake manifold gaskets is just only one part of the equation. The other factor, that also determines whether the new or even the standard intake manifold gaskets are not going to leak for a long time is torquing the intake manifold bolts to their proper torque specification.
To make sure your intake gasket replacement doesn't come back with a coolant leak in the near or long term GM skimped on both the amount and size of the bolts used to keep the intake manifold bolted to the cylinder heads. What I mean is that these are small diameter bolts that have a very small tightening torque specification. I know it sucks that you're having this particular problem with your 4.

See how to spot a symptom, narrow down the cause and treat it. Let me explain: Your car's engine needs oxygen to create explosions within its cylinders to drive the car. It is the role of the intake manifold to provide this oxygen.
Coolant is also distributed to the cylinders in this way. The intake manifold gasket is made of rubber or plastic and attaches the intake manifold to the engine. Due to strain from heat and the resulting contraction and expansion the gasket can get cracked. Coolant and air can leak through these cracks, heating up and suffocating your engine!
Not only does this lead to less performance, but your engine will suffer damage in the long term.Tag heuer carrera calibre 1887
Read this article for some more signs that your car is overheating. When there is too much air in the cylinders, not enough gas is let in.
This leads to weaker explosions, which affects the speed of the pistons and the power of your engine. True, all these symptoms can have many different causes. Keep reading to find out how you can detect a leak and confirm whether it is the cause.
Because of the number of misfires and the decreasing power of the engine, it will need to use more and more fuel to keep going. You will most likely also accelerate harder and harder to try and drive as fast as you usually do.
In the beginning, the difference in petrol usage might be too small for you to notice, but as the crack gets worse and your engine performs less and less it will become more apparent. If you drive roughly the same distance every week you might see your tank draining faster than usual.
You will need to look for an air leak to know it is your intake manifold gasket. The easiest way to know that your car is leaking coolant is to check for an oily puddle underneath the front of your car. But how do I know if it is coolant or something else? The intake manifold gaskets are some of the most important gaskets found on an engine. Gaskets are the seals placed between engine components before they are assembled in order to provide a reliable seal. They can be made of paper, rubber, metal, and sometimes a combination of the three.
The intake manifold gaskets are responsible for sealing the intake manifold against the cylinder head s.
Apart from sealing engine vacuum, certain designs will also seal engine coolant. When the intake manifold gaskets have an issuethey can cause drivability problems and even engine overheating. Usually a faulty intake manifold gasket will produce a few symptoms that can alert the driver of a potential issue. One of the most common symptoms of an issue with intake manifold gaskets is engine performance issues.
As the vehicle acquires mileage, the intake manifold gaskets may wear out and eventually leak. This can cause major performance issues, as the intake manifold gaskets seal engine vacuum and pressure. Another symptom of a faulty intake manifold gasket is coolant leaks. Some intake manifold gaskets also seal engine coolant, and if the gasket wears out it may lead to a coolant leak. This may produce a distinct coolant smellalong with steam, and drips or puddles of coolant underneath the vehicle.
Coolant leaks should be addressed as soon as possible, in order to prevent them from becoming a greater issue. Engine overheating is another symptom of a possible issue with the intake manifold gaskets.
A coolant leak will eventually lead to engine overheating when the coolant level drops too low, however there are instances where overheating can occur without any visible leaks. If the intake manifold gaskets leak coolant into the intake manifold the engine may overheat as a result, without any visible external leaks.Tylenol 500 half life
Any coolant leaks should be addressed as soon as possible to prevent the possibility of serious engine damage occurring due to a bad intake manifold gasket. While a faulty intake manifold gasket will produce symptoms that quickly alert the driver of an issue, there can be instances where a leak is difficult to detect.

A leak in the intake manifold gasket can cause undesirable results such as an oil leak on the front or rear of the engine, a water leak into the cylinders -- which is particularly bad, since water is not compressible -- or a severe vacuum leak resulting in a lean mixture.
A lean mixture will cause detonation, loss of power and a hard misfire in the engine. This is a technical process better left to someone with significant mechanical experience. Place the drain pan under the radiator drain.
Open the drain with the pliers and drain the radiator. Close the drain when finished draining. Remove the air cleaner. Loosen the hose clamp with a screwdriver on the upper radiator hose at the thermostat housing and pull the hose off.How to install intake manifold on a small block chevy/sbc 350
Loosen the hose clamp on the heater hose attached to the front top of the intake manifold and pull the hose off. Remove the alternator support bracket where it attaches to the intake manifold, using a socket if this particular engine uses this type of alternator. Disconnect the fuel line, using the appropriate tool.
If the engine is carbureted, a screwdriver will do to loosen the clamp. If it is fuel-injected and has a spring lock, use the spring lock tool by placing it around the fuel line and forcing it into the connector and under the spring.

While holding the tool in and expanding the spring, pull the lines apart. If they are a snap fitting, lift the plastic clip on the fitting up and pull the lines apart. Disconnect the throttle linkage from the carburetor or throttle body.
Disconnect the TV throttle valve cable from the carburetor, if there is one. Loosen the clamp on the vacuum hose to the brake booster located in the back of the manifold or on the rear of the carburetor.
You will need a screwdriver or pliers, depending on the type of clamp. Pull off any PCV valve hose that may be attached to the carburetor or throttle body. Check to see if there is a coolant temperature sensor on the front driver's side of the manifold. It takes in air and releases continuing fuel and air through the exhaust.
Let me clarify. To drive the car, your car engine needs appropriate air that means oxygen and fuel combination on its cylinder.
5 Leaky Intake Manifold Gasket Symptoms You Need To Know!
It makes explosions on the cylinders. To supply this oxygen is the task of the intake manifold. It distributes the same amount of air to each cylinder.
Generally, a leaky intake manifold gasket will make various symptoms that can alert you at the initial time. So, you need to know the intake manifold gasket leak symptoms clearly. This is made of metal, rubber or plastic and sometimes with the combination of these elements.
It fills the small gap between the engine and intake manifold. If this gasket is failed then excessive air enters into the cylinders.
It causes engine overheating and drivability problems. One of the recognizable symptoms of bad intake manifold gasket is coolant leaks.Premier announcement today ontario
Intake manifold gasket works as a seal for the coolant of your car engine. Generally, when this seals were damaged, then the coolant will flow out over the seal. Leaks allow the coolant and motor oil to mix together. External leaks are very easy to find. But if there is an internal leak which causes the coolant to flow into the combustion chamber is quite tough to spot them.
But you need to ensure, is it coolant leak or not? After confirming the coolant leak, you need to find the location of leaking. If the coolant is leaking out through the joining point of the engine and the manifold, then it happens only for the damaged gasket. The coolant can also leak through the radiator or the rubber pipes. An overheated engine is another reason of the failing intake manifold gaskets. Continuous coolant leaking is the cause of overheated engine.
In every time you do not appear the coolant to be leaking. Sometimes coolant will not leak in the intake manifold gasket, directly go to the intake manifold.
It causes to overheat the engine. Another common symptom is engine performance issue. The leak of intake manifold gasket can create major performance issues like stop engine vacuum and generate pressure.
Symptoms of Bad or Failing Intake Manifold Gaskets
For this reason, too much air enters in the cylinders and there is not enough gas for performing. It will cause engine performance issues like stalling, misfires, decrease acceleration and power. Vacuum air leaks occur for the leaks of intake manifold gasket.Always very quick to respond, friendly and very informative with any questions we had.
